Lyden left Aston Villa in the summer to join Oldham on loan.

Jordan Lyden has told the Oldham Chronicle that he is looking to push on at loan side Oldham Athletic in a bid to win a new contract with Championship outfit Aston Villa.

Lyden, 22, is on loan with League Two Oldham until the January transfer window, but that could indeed be extended until the end of the 2018-19 season after the midfielder has managed just three appearances.

Indeed, the Australian star has been suffering with injury which has plagued his development at Villa Park for many years. But he came off the bench on Saturday to play for 15 minutes during Oldham’s 3-2 loss to Stevenage.

With his contract at Villa set to expire next summer, Lyden claimed that Villa have told him that he will get a new contract if he is given game time with Oldham – and spoke of his desire to earn a new contract.

“For me personally, I just need game time now,” Lyden said. “Villa have told me that if I get game time here, then we can talk about a new contract when I go back.

“I’d like to stay here for the season, get Oldham promoted and then hopefully I can push on back at Villa from there.”

Lyden has suffered multiple knee and muscle injuries as well as undergoing surgery on his ankle last year. Certainly, the midfielder has not had the best of luck.

But his quality is there for all to see. Eight appearances with Villa’s senior side when available, as well as 10 goals in 53 Under-23 appearances suggests that if he remains fit, there is a player in him.

Oldham are next in action away at Notts County on Tuesday night and Lyden will be hoping he has shown enough in his cameo role on Saturday to gain a place in the starting eleven.
