Steven Gerrard is facing one of his first real setbacks since taking over at Rangers with the news that Jamie Murphy is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury in the Gers’ most recent game.

Murphy had made a good start to life under Gerrard, and losing him is undoubtedly a blow as Rangers look to finally put a title challenge together in the Scottish Premiership.

But the Gers boss appears to be determined to respond instantly to the setback with the Express reporting that Klimarnock’s Jordan Jones – who played in the game that saw Murphy sustain the injury – is on the club’s radar in the final days of the summer window.

Jones is undoubtedly one of the most exciting players in the Scottish Premiership, especially when you take the Old Firm out of the equation, but he has major shoes to fill if he ends up coming in as Murphy’s replacement.

And based on some of his statistics from the start of last season, it would appear that he would need to step up quite significantly if he hoped to fill the void that the Scotland international has left.

The Killie ace managed four assists in the league last term, which is perhaps not the most outstanding return given that he was working with the striker who finished as the league’s top goalscorer in Kris Boyd.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is seen during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Rangers and Wigan Athletic at Ibrox Stadium on July 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Murphy meanwhile, managed seven assists after only arriving in January. He also matched Jones’ goals tally in that time. Those goals and assists came during a spell where Kilmarnock were arguably one of the most in-form teams in the league while Rangers’ form fluctuated significantly.

Jones has the natural talent and ability to step into the role and take the opportunity emphatically if he does end up moving to Ibrox this summer. But he undoubtedly has a tough act to follow, and will be under greater pressure to not only create plenty of excitement, but to also back that up by creating numerous chances for his teammates.
