Meanwhile Kilmarnock suffered an embarrassing defeat to Welsh side Connah’s Quay Nomads, losing 2-0 at home and 3-2 on aggregate.
It was a shocking loss, and underlines Jones made the right choice.
Even more important to losing Jones, Kilmarnock lost manager Steve Clarke who took the Scotland job.
His replacement Angelo Alessio has run into trouble already.
Now Jones’ Rangers face Progres Niederkorn in the next round, hoping to exact revenge for a defeat the Ibrox side suffered two years ago.
