Liverpool will be looking to take charge of the Premier League title race when Chelsea visit Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has admitted that ‘it’s difficult’ voicing his opinion to his manager Jurgen Klopp in regards to playing a more advanced role because he is captain of the club.
Last Friday, Henderson came off the bench to inspire his team to a 3-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League, with the England man used in a number 8 role.
For the majority of the time Henderson has worked under Klopp, the German has played him in a number six role and, as a result, he has not been able to express his attacking talents.
But that came to show last Friday and Henderson has revealed that his recent trips with England have persuaded his club manager to push him further forward.
“Me and the gaffer just had a conversation,” said Henderson, as quoted by the Guardian. “Obviously he saw the England games. I felt good playing in that position. I felt more natural and it was something he said he would think about. I can do both positions and he sees I can do both.
“It’s difficult to do that [voice his opinion] – it’s hard. For me as a captain and as a player at this club I always put the team first. I do whatever the manager tells us to do really. But when we had the conversation I felt I could speak my mind.”
The introduction and recent form of the defensive-minded Fabinho has helped Henderson play a more attacking role and it remains to be seen if Klopp will stick to his guns in the league.
Naby Keita is hitting form at the right time and it seems that he may utilise one of those number 8 positions and Henderson will be looking to partner him when they take on Chelsea at the weekend.
On Wednesday night, the Merseyside club beat Porto 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League encounter and they wil now turn their attention to a tricky Premier League encounter.
