Jordan Henderson says he found it difficult at centre-back

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson said on Sky Sports Football (10:14pm, January 4, 2021) that he found it difficult to play as a central defender against Southampton.

Henderson is a midfielder by trade, but against Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League on Monday evening, the England international lined up in defence.

How did Jordan Henderson play against Southampton?

Henderson is a very capable midfielder, but it showed on Monday evening that he is not a great defender.

The 30-year-old was partly at fault for the goal that Liverpool conceded in the opening minutes and did not always look very comfortable.

However, the former Sunderland star did well against Moussa Djenepo and Stuart Armstrong on a couple of occasions and also had a chance to score himself.

According to WhoScored, Henderson took one shot which was not on target, had a pass accuracy of 85.3%, won one header, took 110 touches, attempted one dribble, and made one tackle and two interceptions.

After the match, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was not happy at all that Sadio Mane did not get a penalty, as covered by HITC Sport here, but former Manchester City forward Rodney Marsh believes that the forward dived.

Klopp also said that his Liverpool players will be determined to avenge their 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League in October when they face Dean Smith’s side this week.

The Reds will take on Villa away from home at Villa Park in the third round of the FA Cup on Friday evening.
