Nathaniel Clyne hasn’t played for Liverpool’s senior side this season due to injury.

Jordan Henderson has revealed to The Liverpool Echo that he and his Liverpool team-mates were shocked by how sharp Nathaniel Clyne was in training.

The Reds spent a few days at a warm weather training camp in Spain earlier this month and fit-again Clyne was among those who travelled.

The former Southampton defender hasn’t played for Liverpool this season due to a back injury but came through an Under-23 win unscathed on Sunday.

The 26-year-old, who cost £10 million in 2015, hadn’t kicked a ball for the Reds at any level since July prior to his outing against the Stoke youth side this past weekend.

But Henderson, the Liverpool captain, claims there was no way of knowing that based on how sharp he was in training during the trip to Marbella.

“He was back in the sessions in Marbella and I could see the lads looking at each other and thinking how sharp he is,” Henderson told The Echo.

“He’s come back in fantastic shape and he’s a naturally fit person anyway.

“This is a massive boost for us because Clyney is international quality and will 100% make us even more competitive between now and the season finishing.”

Time will tell over how long it takes manager Jurgen Klopp to introduce him back into the first team but, considering he played the full 90 minutes against the Potters’ Under-23 outfit, a senior recall can’t be far away now.
