Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has praised Tyrone Mings.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has told The Express that he thought Tyrone Mings was ‘magnificent’ in England’s 6-0 win at Bulgaria.

Having lost 2-1 to the Czech Republic on Friday night, England needed a big response away at Bulgaria on Monday, and Gareth Southgate chose to ring the changes for the trip to Sofia.

Ben Chilwell, Ross Barkley, Harry Winks and Marcus Rashford all came into the side, as did Mings as Southgate made five changes – and it certainly paid off.

Southgate’s side coasted to a 6-0 win, as Ross Barkley and Raheem Sterling both bagged braces, with Marcus Rashford scoring the opener and Harry Kane notching the final goal.

England should have been delighted with such a convincing away win, but sadly the game was marred by racist chanting and jeers from Bulgaria fans, causing the game to be halted on a number of occasions.

England could have walked off the pitch, but instead decided to stay on and embarrass Bulgaria with a thumping win, though Mings may feel his England debut was somewhat tainted.

The Aston Villa defender was struggling to get a game for Bournemouth at the start of the year, but is now an England international having partnered Harry Maguire in the heart of the England defence.

Now, Liverpool ace Henderson has noted that the awful scenes in Sofia will tarnish Mings’ debut, but felt he served up a ‘top performance’ and was ‘magnificent’ throughout, showing not only his quality but also his character.

“What happened will obviously tarnish Tyrone’s debut,” said Henderson. “But he dealt with the situation so, so well. It was a top performance for his debut. I thought he was magnificent. That shows the character in him and in the team – and it will just make us stronger,” he added.
