Curtis Jones is still awaiting a Premier League debut under Jurgen Klopp but he shone in style during the EFL Cup recently.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has admitted that he was thrilled to see Curtis Jones pick up the Man of the Match award after an eye-catching performance in the EFL Cup against MK Dons last week, as reported by the Echo.

The 18-year-old made only his second appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s first team at the Stadium MK and marked it in style, helping The Reds win 2-0 on the night.

Jones was a constant threat in the centre of the park, picking the ball in behind the Dons midfield and driving at goal. He even forced Simon Moore into a pair of impressive saves in a display full of maturity and composure well beyond his years.

So no wonder Henderson, who looked a cut above too when making his name in the centre of the park for Sunderland, was impressed by the newest addition to Klopp’s star-studded roster.

“We were all buzzing for Curtis Jones to pick up the MOTM award, particularly knowing how much it will have meant to him being a local lad,” said the Champions League-winning skipper.

“Well-deserved as well – he was brilliant. But I think Curt would be the first to admit there were plenty of decent candidates for it on the night.”

Henderson was quick to pay tribute 16-year-old Harvey Elliott, who looked every inch a genuine wonderkid albeit against League One opposition, while hailing debutant Caoimhin Kelleher for making a number of ‘worldie’ saves in a difficult second half.

Jones, Elliott and Kelleher, not to mention Ki-Jana Hoever, who scored Liverpool’s second goal against MK Dons with a bullet header, should have plenty more chances in the months ahead with Liverpool aiming to compete on four fronts this season.
