Cardiff City have a new hero this weekend in the form of centre-back Sol Bamba after the free agent signing scored on his debut on Friday night.

One of four free agents brought in by newly-appointed manager Neil Warnock since his arrival, Bamba popped up in the manager’s first game in charge to head City into a 2-0 lead against rivals Bristol City.

The Bluebirds would ultimately go on to win the game 2-1, and for Bamba it was a form of redemption after Leeds United boss Garry Monk took the decision to release the 31-year-old last month.

One of Bamba’s former Elland Road teammates was watching on on Friday and celebrated his friend’s success in style on Twitter.

Leeds fans could be forgiven for feeling a little resentment at Bamba’s quick start to life in the Welsh capital, especially when you consider how his Whites career tailed off.

The Ivorian was initially a key figure in the Leeds side, a figurehead and leader at the back and off the pitch, but began to become more and more unreliable and error-prone as his career in Yorkshire wore on.

Now, though, it appears as though he may have found a new lease of life at the Cardiff City Stadium.
