The Villa forward believe he and the new signing can thrive together.
Aston Villa forward Jordan Ayew has told the club’s official website that he and new teammate Ross McCormack just need some time playing together to gel in order to strike up a great partnership.
Ayew played alongside McCormack for the first time on Sunday as the pair started behind Rudy Gestede in attack in a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday in the club’s Championship opener.
Both players showed flashes of their ability throughout the game and they each had one of the side’s best chances to score, Ayew heading straight at Kieran Westwood and McCormack being denied when through on goal by a superb defensive recovery challenge from Tom Lees.
Though the result – and the manner of it, with the late winner from Fernando Forestieri after an error from new goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini – will be hard to take for Villa, there were positive signs from the relegated club.
Ayew believes that McCormack’s performance was one of the things that was most encouraging, and suggested that the attacking pair can strike up a profitable partnership in front of goal this season.
The Ghana international told avfc.co.uk: “I thought Ross had a really good game. He put in a very good performance.
“We need time to gel. He only arrived a few days ago but we all enjoyed playing alongside him. We need a little bit of time together.”
It was a frustrating start to life in the second tier for Villa, but Ayew and McCormack undoubtedly have the quality to be a top-class Championship strike partnership.
Ayew is still being linked with a move away from Villa, but both manager Roberto di Matteo and Villa owner Tony Xia continue to insist that he will not be sold this summer.
