Aston Villa needed to sell before they could land Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan but a deal to sell Jordan Amavi to Sevilla looks dead.

Whatever the reason, it appears that Jordan Amavi will not be signing for Sevilla on a permanent deal this summer.

As reported by the Birmingham Mail, the left-back had agreed to sign for the Andalucian side for a fee of around £8 million, only for the deal to fall through when Sevilla claimed that he had failed his medical.

Villa disputed such claims, owner Tony Xia accusing the La Liga giants of lacking integrity. And the BBC sport add that the Midlands club will now rebuff Sevilla’s attempts to secure Amavi on a season-long loan deal.

And while this new twist will surely disappoint all parties. Amavi had made clear his desire to test himself against the best in European competition and Sevilla, who have a gap at left-back after releasing Benoit Tremoulinas, will be playing Champions League football next season.

Villa, meanwhile, desperately needed the money. According to The Telegraph, they are being forced to sell before they buy this summer due to Financial Fair Play restrictions. But with potential suitors giving the likes of Ross McCormack and Aaron Tshibola a wide berth, Villa really could have done with making big money from Amavi’s exit.

And this really doesn’t aid Villa’s desire to sign Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan this summer. The Sun claimed that Villa were favourites for the Republic of Ireland veteran after Derby County ended their interest, but added that they would be forced to wait until they managed to sell a number of their expensive flops before completing a deal.

The report claims Villa had an offer of £500,000 rejected by Stoke and were unwilling, or perhaps unable, to meet their £1 million asking price. However, with Amavi’s deal seemingly dead, Steve Bruce’s hopes of landing Whelan may have taken a hit.
