Whichever club signs Jonny Evans for a reported £3m fee will have secured a bargain, but Newcastle do not need to get involved in the scramble.

Newcastle United are one of a number of Premier League clubs interested in Jonny Evans, according to the Mirror.

West Bromwich Albion’s impending relegation will see Evans depart for a very attractive £3million, making it little surprise that there are several interested parties.

There are a couple of key reasons why Newcastle would want to muscle their way to the front of the queue, too.

Rafa Benitez has been desperate to add some experience to his squad, as reported by the Chronicle, and Evans would bring that, while the low fee would be attractive to both the manager and owner Mike Ashley.

But there is also a big problem: Newcastle really do not need Evans.

This would represent a great deal, there is no doubt about that, but the Northern Ireland international would understandably expect to start at St James’ Park.

It might be a different story if he had been signed last year, before the arrival of Florian Lejeune, when he could have formed a partnership with captain Jamaal Lascelles.

Now, though, Lejeune is settled alongside Lascelles, offering the type of ball-playing option that Evans would.

The £3million fee may not dent Benitez’s transfer kitty too badly and his experience would be a welcome boost to the squad, but the signing would also create problems.

Newcastle should look at potential signings such as these, but perhaps not in a position where the Magpies are fairly well stocked.
