As The Guardian reports, it is looking increasingly unlikely that a takeover of Newcastle United will be completed in time to hand Rafael Benitez a January warchest.
Mike Ashley told Sky Sports, according to The Guardian, that negotiations with prospective buyer Amanda Staveley had been a “waste of time” and that no deal was on the table.
With Ashley reluctant to dip into his own pocket while the future of the club remains uncertain, it may be up to Benitez to create his own funds by selling some existing players.
Striker Dwight Gayle has been linked with a £15m move to Fulham by The Chronicle, while The Express claim that West Ham United are ready to spend £12m on midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.
Which of these first-team regulars is the most dispensable for Benitez?
Gayle has scored three goals in 20 Premier League appearances this season, and none of them have been worth a single point to the Magpies, who are only three above the relegation zone.
While he may have a reputation as a master passer, Shelvey has been no more influential for United, failing to contribute a single goal or assist in his 17 league outings this campaign.
Although Newcastle lack quality in midfield already, it is goals that will keep them up and therefore Benitez would be unwise to sell Gayle even if he brings in a replacement.
Mikel Merino, Isaac Hayden and Mohamed Diame are capable of filling in for Shelvey if the 25-year-old is sold, which could allow Benitez to add a winger and a left-back to his squad.
