Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been discussing his recent scintillating form for the Magpies, as he preparers to take on Wolves this weekend, in comments appearing in the Chronicle.

The 24-year-old has been a central figure in Newcastle’s dominant performances, with the former Swansea and Liverpool man netting twice during the Magpies’ 6-0 rout of QPR earlier in the week.

“I feel at the top of my game at the minute,” Shelvey is quoted as saying by the Chronicle.

“I feel I’m playing well and performing well within the team. I’m playing games and that’s what you want.”

Shelvey was a big money signing in January from South Wales to try and keep the Tyneside club in the Premier League, and though he was unable to show his best form as Newcastle slipped into the Championship, it is certainly a different story this season as the club seek to make an instant return to the top flight.

Unsurprisingly, the England international has pointed to the impact Benitez has made on both his performances, and on the squad, as key reasons for the recent upturn.

“It’s just nice to have someone show a bit of faith in you by picking you to play,” he said.

“We never know the team until less than two hours before kick-off so you’re just still guessing. He’s keeping everyone on their toes and making sure everyone prepares correctly for every game.

“It’s just part and parcel of football but he’s shown some serious faith in me this year by playing me.”

Shelvey will be hoping to continue his form against Wolves on Saturday, with the Magpies pushing to extend a five match winning run. The midfielder has scored or assisted in each of the last three matches, and has to be a danger to any Championship side he takes on right now.
