Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey celebrates after he scored their second goal
Speaking to Sky Sports, Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has claimed that the Magpies are as big as Liverpool.
Shelvey joined the Magpies earlier this year, making the move from Swansea City to St. James’ Park in the January transfer window.
It was not the first big move of the midfielder’s career, having joined Liverpool from Charlton at the age of 18. Many would argue his career has taken a downward trajectory since his time at Anfield, with the clubs he has played for arguably lesser in stature than the 18-time league winners.

Shelvey argues differently though, saying he thinks Newcastle are actually as big a side as the Reds.
“I don’t regret going to sign for Newcastle. It’s such a big club to go and play for,” he told Sky Sports.
“It’s a massive club – in terms of size I’d put it on par with Liverpool. It’s probably one of the best stadiums that I’ve gone to play every week at. The fans are just great. They get behind you and you seen last night exactly what they’re like.”

Shelvey will now be hoping he can play a role in helping restore Newcastle’s image in the Championship this season, having scored the second goal in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.
The pressure is very much on them in the division, with many believing they should comfortably secure promotion given the squad at their disposal.
It has already been proven that it will not be an easy campaign for them though, and it will take players like Shelvey playing at their best to help them secure a return to the Premier League and where they think they should be.
