West Ham United striker Andy Carroll has struggled for game time at the London club in recent seasons.
BBC Sport pundit Jonathan Walters has suggested that Andy Carroll could stay at West Ham United beyond this season and sign a pay-as-you-play deal.
The 30-year-old striker’s struggles with injuries and form has continued this season as he has only managed 453 minutes of Premier League football [transfermarkt].
Carroll injured himself in pre-season and he was already on the back foot before a ball was kicked. His only goal of the season came against Championships side Birmingham City in the FA Cup.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (21/05/2019 at 7:55 pm), former Stoke City and Burnley striker Walters shared an interesting take on what could happen to Carroll.
“What I think will happen with someone like Andy Carroll, and there was talk of him signing a new deal at West Ham, it’ll be a pay-as-you-play deal,” Walters told BBC Radio 5 Live. “They are at a certain age. They have young children. He’s just brought a new house in London and he won’t want to move north to a certain area.
“He possibly wouldn’t want to travel to games, he’s had a lot of injuries, so he’ll be on a very small wage and it’ll be on a huge appearance fee. I think that’s what you’ll find will happen with the older players now. That’s what clubs are tending to do with players that are on free transfers now or wanting to stay at the club.”
The Sun recently claimed that Carroll, who is earning around £100k-a-week at the London Stadium, could be offered a new deal by the club with his contract due to run out at the end of next month.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side finished the Premier League campaign in 10th place after they pipped Watford to that spot by beating them on the last day of the season.
Nonetheless, Carroll will be hoping to stay fit during the summer and aiming to make his mark on the league next season, whichever team he is playing for.
