The striker is heading back to Birmingham thanks to Ivory Coast’s Africa Cup of Nations exit.

Aston Villa fans are welcoming new signings on Wednesday, but they received a piece of arguably even better news this week.

While Steve Bruce has added Iceland international Birkir Bjarnason and Barnsley defender James Bree to his squad, he will soon be able to call upon his top scorer once more.

That is because Jonathan Kodjia’s Ivory Coast have been knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations, and so Kodjia will be returning to the UK shortly.

On Wednesday, Kodjia sent a message to Villa fans in which he made it clear how lucky he feels to be at the club.

Kodjia has scored nine goals in 23 Championship games this season but has not played for Villa since scoring in the 1-1 draw with Leeds on 29 December.

In his absence, Villa have gained just one point from three league games, and have netted just twice in the last four matches in all competitions, with both strikes coming from Albert Adomah in the 2-2 draw with Preston last weekend.

The importance of Kodjia’s return is hard to underestimate for Villa. He has been their danger man all season long, and Villa fans will be praying his return can spark their side back into life.
