19-year-old Tottenham goalkeeper Jonathan De Bie has been named in the club’s pre-season tour squad.

It is the Belgian under-21 international’s first overseas tour with Spurs and a nod to his impressive progress.

Tottenham signed De Bie from Excelsior Mouscron in 2016 and he has had an eventful spell since.

He suffered a ruptured spleen on international duty with Belgium’s under-19s in 2017 after colliding with an opponent.

This led to him taking several months off, and Tottenham’s official website describe the teenager as ‘fearless’, in tribute to his recovery from such a serious injury.

De Bie recovered and captained the under-18s and has since captained the under-23s.

Now on tour, he has a chance to impress and stake a claim to replace Michel Vorm.

With the Dutchman departed on a free transfer, Spurs are yet to decide on a third choice goalkeeper behind Hugo Lloris and Paulo Gazzaniga.

De Bie’s academy colleague Alfie Whiteman is also heading out on another pre-season tour and himself hopes to solidify his own case to step up.

Spurs need one of the promising youngsters to show they are ready, and save them money in the transfer market.
