Jonathan David has given an update on his future amid quotes published by CalcioMercato – with Arsenal said to have a ‘long-standing’ interest in the Lille striker. The New York-born ace has scored 17 goals during 21-22.

David, 22, joined Lille from Gent in the summer of 2020 and struggled in his first season – only netting 13 times in 48 games, failing to register an assist. This time around, the Canada ace has 17 goals and five assists in 44.

A much better showing from David and it has seen Arsenal become interested in his services, especially because he is only 22 years of age. The Athletic claim Arsenal have a ‘long-standing’ interest in his services.

A player branded “pretty strong” by Thierry Henry, David has now given an update on his future at Lille – where he has a deal until the summer of 2025. He says there will be talks with the Ligue 1 side at the end of the season.

“My mind is not elsewhere as some say. I have ambition, I want to improve, but I’m still here. At the end of the season I will rest and maybe there will be talks with the club. My agent will take care of it. We’ll see how it goes.”

Arsenal eye David: Is he the kind of striker Arteta needs at Emirates?

Without a doubt. David fits the kind of profile Arsenal like to sign – young but experienced, between the age of 20 and 25. Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Martin Odegaard all examples.

With Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah still out of contract, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaving for Barcelona, a striker is crucial. If they are to sign David, then it comes down to the amount of cash required.

If a fee above £50million, then Arsenal need to look elsewhere. The Gunners have a good relationship with Lille, though, having signed Gabriel and Nicolas Pepe from them – and being constantly linked with Renato Sanches.
