Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have come on leaps and bounds under Graeme Murty.

Jonatan Johansson has told Herald Scotland that Graeme Murty deserves lots of credit for the way in which he has improved Rangers.

The 43-year-old replaced Pedro Caixinha on an interim basis in October, before earning the job until the end of the season after the Gers’ hierarchy tried and failed to hire a long-term successor for the Portuguese.

But Murty is certainly doing everything he can to make Rangers postpone a search for the next manager by staking a very good claim for the job himself.

The Blues are still reeling from back-to-back defeats by Celtic and Kilmarnock, but prior to that Murty’s side had put together a six-match winning streak to give themselves a slight lifeline of Premiership glory.

Johansson, brought back to Glasgow by Caixinha as a coach last year, saw his services retained by Murty even after the 47-year-old was axed, and the legendary Finland international, who won 106 caps for his country, can’t speak highly enough about the former Reading defender.

“He’s been great, and that has helped him to plan,” he told Herald Scotland.

“It is difficult to plan week-to-week than it is over a longer period at a club, and he is growing more and more into the role. He is handling himself really well, and I think you have seen massive improvements on the pitch.

“He’s one of those guys who is never happy, he is always looking to improve, and it keeps everybody striving to get better.”

The last two games have certainly put a downer on Murty’s stint, but by and large it’s been a huge success and it’s also worth remembering that he has set up Rangers to be a force next season, if he is axed this summer.

Murty struck loan deals for the likes of Russell Martin, Sean Goss, Jason Cummings and Jamie Murphy in January and most of those are expected to be made permanent in the transfer window.
