Jonas Gutierrez has taken to Twitter to send Newcastle a message, after the Magpies congratulated him on his retirement from football.

What’s the story?

Well, the Newcastle icon has called time on his hugely inspirational playing career at the age of 38.

Gutierrez played his final game on Monday, appearing for Primera B Nacional side Club Almagro in his home city of Buenos Aires.

After seeing Newcastle congratulate him on his career, the Argentine posted the following message.

Despite playing for nine clubs, Gutierrez spent more time at St James’ Park than any other stadium, making 205 appearances.

Famously, he scored the goal to keep Newcastle in the Premier League, doing so after fighting off cancer – what an inspiration.

Should Newcastle give Jonas Gutierrez a role?

Under Mike Ashley, there was no room for sentiment at Newcastle.

There was no romance, no involvement with former heroes, and simply no love whatsoever – it was a cold place.

Now, it’s time for Amanda Staveley to get popular figures involved on Tyneside, to inject a bit of Newcastle DNA back into the Magpies.

With Gutierrez now retired, it would certainly be worth offering him some kind of ambassadorial role, in our view.

There has already been talk of getting Alan Shearer involved.

The Telegraph revealed that Shearer is likely to accept the offer of an ambassadorial role, to help advise the new owners.

Doing the same with Gutierrez would be a PR tap-in for Staveley, and a decision which few people – if any – would complain about.
