Kalvin Phillips was in action for Leeds United against Birmingham City at the weekend.
Phillips featured for Leeds in their Championship game against Birmingham away from home at St. Andrew’s this past Saturday afternoon.
The 23-year-old started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes, as Marcelo Bielsa’s side lost 1-0.
Former Leeds defender Newsome was following the match for BBC Radio Leeds, and he was impressed with the display produced by the youngster.
Newsome said about Phillips on BBC Radio Leeds: “I would add, I thought Kalvin Phillips was outstanding again today out of the outfield players. He put a real shift in.
“He was asked to do, in my opinion, a really difficult role, dropping into the back-three and then going and joining up in midfield when he felt it was the right time to do it.”

According to WhoScored, against Birmingham this past Saturday, Phillips had a pass accuracy of 77.3%, won three headers, and made four tackles, one interception and three clearances.
So far this season, Phillips – who can also been deployed in defence by head coach Bielsa on occasions – has made 37 appearances in the Championship for Leeds, scoring one goal and providing three assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
Leeds are third in the Championship table at the moment with 76 points from 40 matches, a point behind second-placed Sheffield United.
