Rangers could be in need of a new goalkeeper at Ibrox this summer.
Steven Gerrard will already be drawing up plans ahead of the summer transfer window as Rangers manager, with the Liverpool legend said to have agreed a deal at Ibrox – and a new goalkeeper will be at the top of his agenda.
The Scottish Sun claim former Swindon Town goalkeeper Wes Foderingham is set to leave Ibrox this summer, with Championship clubs Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest keen to nab the 27-year-old stopper.
Doubts have always surrounded the goalkeeper’s consistency since the Gers returned to the Premiership, renowned for being one of those players who are capable of a big mistake at the back.
The Gers are said to be in talks with Hull City veteran Allan McGregor over a return to Ibrox, but at 36, sentimentality needs to be pushed aside and a more sensible approach must be taken.
Instead, Gerrard must look to solve the conundrum between the sticks by convincing Hearts goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin to remain in Scotland and indeed move to Ibrox – despite his desire to move back into the English Football League.
McLaughlin, 30, has starred in goal at Tynecastle this season, and had been previously believed to want a move down south. But talking to the BBC late last month, he admitted he could remain in Scotland.
One thing is for sure, though, is that the 30-year-old will leave Craig Levein’s side at the end of the season with his one-year contract set to expire in less than four weeks.
The former Burton Albion goalkeeper has been immense for Hearts this season, conceding only 30 goals in 34 appearances and keeping an impressive 15 clean sheets in all competitions.
Landing a proven Scottish Premiership performer such as Northern Ireland international McLaughlin will give the Gers the defensive foundation to kick on and close the gap between themselves and Celtic, under the stewardship of Gerrard.
