Reading couldn’t get the win they wanted – and needed – against Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, as they played out a 2-2 draw at the Madejski Stadium.
The Royals are still mired in a relegation battle and need all the help they can get, with Jaap Stam will somewhat clinging onto his job just a year after the Dutchman took Reading to the Championship play-off final.
Stam did get the perfect start though, as Icelandic forward Jon Dadi Bodvarsson finished coolly when through on goal, handing Reading a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
However, Leeds hit back as Pontus Jansson equalised before half time, and playmaker Pablo Hernandez struck the Whites in front after the break – only for Eunan O’Kane’s own goal to put Reading back on level terms.
Reading had to settle for a point in the end, and that leaves them six points clear of the Championship relegation zone, meaning there is still plenty of work to do before Stam and co are safe.
After the final whistle, Reading striker and goalscorer Bodvarsson took to Twitter to send a message to fans, noting that it was ‘disappointing’ not to claim all three points against Paul Heckingbottom’s struggling Leeds side.
Ex-Leeds loanee Modou Barrow was quiet on Twitter after the game despite featuring against his former club, and Reading fans will now hope that Bodvarsson’s ‘step by step’ rallying cry comes true in the coming weeks.
