Former England defender Joleon Lescott has told Sky Sports News HQ’s Premier League Daily (broadcast 6th September 2017 from 10:00 am) that if he was given the choice to join either Tottenham or Arsenal right now, he would pick a move to Mauricio Pochettino’s side, joking that he would personally be better off joining the Gunners.

The North London rivals may be separated by seven places in the current Premier League table, but they return to top flight action this weekend following the international break with just one point between them.

However, there are arguably significantly different moods emanating from the two clubs, with Tottenham feeling extremely optimistic after a busy end to the transfer window, while the Gunners failed to add to their squad in the final days of the summer, and sold Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool, the team that dispatched Arsene Wenger’s men 4-0 in their final game before the break.

And Lescott – who has been relegated from the Premier League in the last two seasons – joked that the only reason that he would personally choose to sign for Arsenal right now is the fact that it would be easier for him to get into their team than to get into Spurs’, and thus, for a player in their prime, the choice seems fairly simple.

“Me personally, I’d probably sign for Arsenal just due to the fact that Spurs have a better defence and I probably wouldn’t play,” he joked when asked to choose between the two on Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily.

“In terms of progression and looking forward, you probably would say Spurs. The way that they’re building a new stadium, the players and the squad that they’ve got, the way they like to play and the last three years they’ve been consistently in the Champions League spots.”

Unfortunately, you would struggle to find many Arsenal fans who would feel that the club is currently moving in the right direction both on and off the pitch.

And while they will surely stop short of praising their bitter rivals, it must hurt them that it was Tottenham who were much busier on deadline day and appear to have done the better business throughout the window, and look to be in a much better position to challenge for the title than the Gunners are this season.
