Donyell Malen is reportedly set to join Borussia Dortmund for £25m, and there’s good news and bad news for Arsenal.
The good news is that Arsenal are entitled to a percentage of that fee, but the bad news is they’re only set to receive a windfall of £250,000, or 1% of the total fee, according to Football London.
As you can imagine, some fans had plenty to say about this report, and it’s fair to say they’re not happy.
Why are Arsenal only due 1% of this fee? Well, it’s not a sell-on clause in the traditional sense, instead, it’s a solidarity payment that clubs are due when their academy product makes an international transfer.
It has to be said that Arsenal made a mistake in allowing Malen to leave without putting in a decent sell-on fee themselves, and fans aren’t happy with this update whatsoever.
Indeed, this pitiful windfall has been branded as ‘embarrassing’ and a ‘joke’ by the fanbase, and while Arsenal didn’t negotiate this 1% fee, we have to agree that it’s a damning indictment of the Gunners’ handling of Malen when he was at the club.
Receiving just £250,000 for the future transfer of a player as talented as Malen is a bit of a disaster, and Arsenal should’ve handled the Dutchman better when he was at the Emirates.
