Jamie Carragher told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports that Leicester City are ‘a model’ to the likes of West Ham, Everton and Aston Villa that you can ‘dream’ big.
Five years after that famous Premier League triumph, the Foxes are now heading towards the Champions League, and they could potentially be joined by West Ham.
The Hammers are sitting fifth in the Premier League table, whilst Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton, alongside Villa, are sitting outside of the Europa League places – although, they have games in hand.
Either way, following the saga of the European Super League, Carragher thinks the Foxes are the example for the inspiring and progressing clubs, who aren’t deemed to be ‘top-six’.
“Well, Leicester as a football club probably thought it was a bigger joke (the European Super League) than we all did,” said Carragher.
“When you consider where they have been in the last couple of years. The thing with Leicester is that they are the great example because they are a model for everybody else who is outside this supposed top-six.
“Everton, Aston Villa and West Ham. And don’t forget, you go back seven years, Leicester were in the Championship. So, that’s where the dream comes from.”
The so-called ‘top-six’ have only been that for about five years, yet it’s made out as if they have a divine right to hold that tag and have been in that position for far longer than that.
Leicester and Brendan Rodgers deserve more respect for the work they have done over the last few years compared to an Arsenal or Tottenham, who are declining and showing no signs of progression.
Whereas, the likes of Everton and Villa, historically have more trophies and top-six finishes than many of those who are dubbed as the ‘big six’.
Either way, these sleeping giants are upsetting the apple cart and there doesn’t seem to be any sign that they will stop.
