Is quitting Everton for Tottenham beneficial for Ross Barkley’s international aims?
England’s Eric Dier, Ross Barkley, John Stones and Dele Alli during training
Ross Barkley was once again an unused substitute for England in their latest international, a familiar tale for the Everton attacker.
It made seven consecutive games watching from the sidelines without playing a single minute, and The Mail report his frustration is growing, by ‘liking’ a Twitter post highlighting his lack of action.
Barkley is the only Everton player in the England squad, and it surely will not be lost on him that the club he is linked with joining has several starters.
The attacker has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, with The Mirror reporting he is their top summer target.
England Manager Gareth Southgate
Tottenham had Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Kyle Walker all starting for the Three Lions against Lithuania, a trio which would have been a quartet had it not been for Harry Kane being injured.
Barkley’s latest snub could encourage him to consider the option of joining the London club, who also will have Champions League football on offer next season as it stands.
Getting the chance to play alongside Alli, Dier and Kane will put Barkley into the spotlight, and highlight to England boss Gareth Southgate that he should be trusted for the Three Lions.
If he can strike up a rapport with the Spurs stars, his international chances will be enhanced, bringing in a ready made partnership, rather than Southgate’s coaching staff having to conjure one up.
