Rangers icon Derek Johnstone has claimed in his Glasgow Evening Times column that Steven Gerrard can bring the best out of inconsistent attacker Josh Windass during 2018-19.

Gerrard officially starts work at Ibrox on Friday after signing a four-year deal with the Gers last month, and has plenty of work to sort out before the squad return from their holidays later this month.

There is work to be done in the transfer window despite already signing three players, with depth out wide and a couple of centre-backs likely to be high on Gerrard’s agenda in the coming months.

Josh Windass of Rangers is challenged by Kristoffer Ajer of Celtic during the Scottish Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on April 15, 2018 in Glasgow,...

But getting the best out of what he has already got is key, too. Johnstone reckons Gerrard is capable of doing just that, by helping Windass’ glimpses of class turn into consistent ones.

“I will also be interested to see if Gerrard can bring the best out of some of the more inconsistent members of the squad, particularly Josh Windass,” Johnstone said.

“The boy has all the attributes to be a top player, and learning from one of the best goalscoring midfielders the British game has ever produced can only benefit him.”

Josh Windass of Rangers scores his sides first goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Windass impressed last season, being used in deep midfield, out wide, up front or in the number 10 role and scored 18 goals while also turning provider a further eight times during his 41 league and cup appearances.

But the former Accrington Stanley star was guilty of going missing in games, and Gerrard will look to prevent that from happening this season by getting the playmaker more involved.

Gerrard will take charge of his first competitive fixture as Rangers manager on July 12, when the Gers embark on a Europa League qualifying campaign.
