The 30-year-old defender is approaching the end of his contract at Anfield and is not expecting to be offered a new one.
Following Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat to Hull City in the Premier League, Johnson confirmed that he had not been offered a new contract at Liverpool and was expecting to leave the club.
It was a fitting stage upon which to make the comments, as Johnson has had a largely disappointing time at Anfield, making nearly 200 appearances in a red shirt, but never truly justifying the £18.5 million transfer fee (per the Telegraph) that brought him north from Portsmouth six years ago.
Furthermore, a low-key Europa League place looks like all Liverpool are likely to obtain from a campaign in which they have struggled to hit the heights that brought a title challenge and a second-placed finish last term.
Johnson has only won the League Cup in his time at the club, in 2012, and the ongoing trophy drought at Anfield may well see a number of established players leave the club this summer, particularly with a big-name striker top of Brendan Rodgers’ shopping list.
Following the defeat to Hull, Johnson told Sky Sports that he was expecting to leave the club: “I would have thought so – I haven’t got a contract. We’ll have to wait and see.”
Now, the ex-West Ham United, Chelsea and Portsmouth right-back is expected to return to the south where a number of clubs will fight for his signature.
