Johnny Giles has told Leeds Live that Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play is capable of getting Leeds United back into the Premier League – and the Elland Road legend also heaped praise on owner Andrea Radrizzani.

Leeds remain in first place despite suffering a third defeat in four Championship outings to Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, with Gjanni Alioski’s consolation unable to prevent Stoke from earning all three points.

Indeed, Nathan Jones secured a first win as manager as Sam Clucas and Joe Allen found the back of the net. Norwich City beat Birmingham City on Friday night, meaning they have closed the gap to just one point.

But Giles, who was a key member of Don Revie’s all-conquering Leeds side, believes Bielsa’s style is enough to get the Whites promoted and the Irishman also raved about Italian owner Radrizzani.

“Hopefully, fingers crossed, they’ll be be able to do the business this season and get back to where the club belongs – in the Premier League,” Giles said. “It’s very attractive, [they’re] scoring goals. It’s good to watch and effective – which is the most important thing.

“The atmosphere’s always good when things are good on the pitch. There’s no doubt they’ve been better on the pitch this season than they have been for many seasons.

“They’ve got a new owner in which has done a lot of good, and fingers crossed it continues to do so.”

Leeds are expected to be active in the transfer market after completing a deal to sign Kiko Casilla from Real Madrid last week. A winger, and perhaps a new number 10 are expected to be brought to the club.

The Whites are next in action against Yorkshire neighbours Rotherham United at the New York Stadium next Saturday, before a huge top-of-the-table clash against Norwich City on February 2.
