John Terry posted on Twitter that Chelsea should have scored ‘4’ or ‘5’ in the first half of their 2-0 League Cup semi-final first-leg win over Tottenham on Wednesday night.
Chelsea raced into an early lead when Kai Havertz opened the scoring after five minutes following early pressure on Tottenham’s backline.
The home side continued to dominate possession and the game, as Antonio Conte, upon his return to Stamford Bridge, saw his side fail to have a shot on target in the first half.
What perhaps summed up Tottenham’s opening 45 minutes was the calamitous own goal from Ben Davies, which saw Japhet Tanganga, from a set-piece situation, head the ball onto his own teammate, which was then diverted into the back of the net.
Either way, Chelsea hold the advantage heading into the second leg and Conte’s men have their work cut out ahead of their return leg next week.
During the game, Chelsea legend Terry was watching on and he was pretty pleased with what he was seeing.
The former centre-back, who has returned to the club in a coaching capacity with the club’s academy players, posted this message during the match.
This was, without a doubt, the worst performance ever since Conte took charge of the club and a sign that things aren’t going to be as rosy as he thinks.
On one hand, there shouldn’t be an overreaction because things have been going well under the Italian, for most parts.
But, on the other, there was a reason why Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho were sacked, and it’s not just because of their coaching ability.
As for Chelsea, after all the drama surrounding Romelu Lukaku, they have put all that to bed with the Belgian returning and playing his part in them having one foot in the final.
