While Aston Villa are celebrating the signing of John Terry, they have bigger problems in attack ahead of the new Championship season.
Tony Xia has confirmed that former Chelsea captain John Terry is set to complete a move to Aston Villa.
Terry’s contract at Stamford Bridge, where he made his debut against Villa in 1998, expired last week, leaving him free to join a new club.
And now Villa owner Xia has announced on Twitter that the ex-England international has opted for a move to Villa Park, rejecting interest from rivals Birmingham City.
While Steve Bruce may see Terry’s signing as a major coup, it represents a rather bizarre move given his side’s limitations in attack.
Villa conceded 48 goals last season in the Championship – 10 less than promoted Huddersfield Town – but they scored just 47 times, with only three teams mustering a lower tally.
The Birmingham Mail reported earlier in the summer that Bruce could have just £1million to spend and Terry, although a free signing, will surely demand a hefty chunk of wages.
Villa did not need a new centre-back, but they have one. They now desperately need to add goals, easing the burden on top scorer Jonathan Kodjia.
