Aston Villa defender John Terry has penned a one-year deal after his contract expired at Chelsea.
Terry signed for Villa on a one-year deal, following the expiration of his contract at Chelsea.
The centre-back is expected to have a key role at Villa over the upcoming Championship campaign.
But Terry admits that he has not made plans to stay at Villa Park beyond a year, as he doesn’t know how his body will hold up.
“I’m not too sure. It’s not within the deal,” Terry said, when asked if he could sign a contract extension at Villa. “Solely the main purpose for me is for this one year to play as a player and nothing else, and give it everything I’ve got to get us there.
“If that is the case and we do get there, then it’s a discussion we’ll all have to have.
“Steve will be the obvious one to make that decision.
“But depending on how I felt after the season and everything else, then who knows?
“Every ex-player I spoke to over the summer, the first thing they said to me was ‘play as long as you can’. There will be a point in your life when your body tells you ‘no’.”
Terry was regularly kept on the substitutes’ bench last term, when he was with Chelsea.
At Villa he will be handed a much more important first-team role, and looks set to be a permanent starter for Steve Bruce’s side when fit.
Terry is likely to make his Villa debut at the weekend, when the claret and blues get their league season under way.
Villa kick off their campaign with a match against Hull City tomorrow, with the contest set to be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
