John Terry pokes fun at Tottenham when delivering verdict on Harry Kane

John Terry has told BeIN Sports that Harry Kane needs to leave Tottenham and join Real Madrid, saying he wants to win trophies – and “clearly”, Spurs are not going to be able to give him that. He thinks Kane is the best no.9 in the world.

Kane, 29, continues to be linked with the exit door at Tottenham. Of course, he came close to doing so back in the summer of 2021 – with Manchester City interested. But a gentleman’s agreement with Daniel Levy was not enough.

He remains at Spurs. But his contract is due to expire at the end of the 23-24 season and Spurs have got to make a decision soon. Can they convince Kane to sign a new deal – or, will they be forced to cash in. If so, next summer?

Levy will still want a good price for his talisman. If Kane refuses to sign a new deal, then he will have to sell him at the end of the current season in order to bring in a decent fee for Kane. Terry urged him to go, having a “pop” at Spurs.

“I see it,” Terry said, when asked if Kane could join Real Madrid. “I think he’s got ambition to go and win trophies. He’s clearly not going to win trophies playing at Spurs, is he. Whether that’s for four, five or six years.

“He’s not though, let’s be honest. Any chance I get to have a pop at Spurs, I will. He’s one of the best strikers in the world. Probably the best no.9 in the world. He wants to win trophies. He wants to play for the biggest teams.

“Spurs are not that, they are not going to give him what he wants. He wants to finish his career with some trophies. So he can look back and say, ‘yeah, I’m proud of that’,” Terry continued, during his analysis on BeIN Sports.

Terry’s bias against Tottenham is clear. But his point holds some truth, it is now almost 15 years since Tottenham last won a trophy – the 2008 League Cup. The tide is turning back towards the top, but Antonio Conte needs time.

Spurs are a project. It is a long time since the days of a Champions League final and a title push under Mauricio Pochettino. Can Conte convince Kane that those days are going to return and if so, quick enough for Kane to stay?

Perhaps, England can do Tottenham a favour. By winning the World Cup, it might quench Kane’s need for silverware and encourage him to remain at Spurs for the foreseeable – rather than pursuing club honours at a different club.
