Former Chelsea defender John Terry joined Dean Smith’s coaching staff at Aston Villa in October.
Chelsea legend John Terry has admitted that the ‘depth and detail’ coaches have to go through on a daily basis has surprised him since joining the Aston Villa backroom staff.
The 38-year-old ended his playing career in October and then joined Dean Smith’s coaching staff at Villa following the sacking of Steve Bruce.
Since that transition from player to coach, Terry has had to adopt a new role in his career as he looks to start his managerial career path.
Three months into his new role, Terry opened up about what he didn’t expect as he originally felt that he had an ‘understanding’ of the backroom setup.
“I didn’t realise the detail that goes into the work and prep before,” Terry told AVTV. “I’d like to think as a player I had a good understanding of what went on behind the scenes from the managers, and coaches.
“But certainly opened my eyes to the depth and details that go into it.”
Last season, centre-back Terry was playing at the heart of Villa’s defence alongside James Chester as Bruce’s side reached the playoff finals.
That damaging defeat to Fulham resulted in a number of sweeping changes across the club, from new owners, new boardroom members and a new manager in Smith.
At this moment in time, Villa are sitting four points outside of the playoff places as they will be looking to crawl up the table during the business end of the season.
The Midlands outfit will travel to Reading at the weekend, with Chester and Tommy Elphick set to continue their partnership in defence.
