Glasgow Rangers are preparing for their first season since Steven Gerrard’s appointment at Ibrox was announced.

In comments reported by the Daily Record, Declan John has insisted that he has noticed a change in attitude amongst the Rangers squad in pre-season with the players determined to make an impression on new boss Steven Gerrard.

After two uninspiring seasons following their return to the Scottish Premiership, the Gers have arguably rolled the dice once again this summer with Gerrard taking his first management job in senior football by becoming Graeme Murty’s successor.

In fairness to the Light Blues, they have certainly backed the manager in the transfer market with six new signings made already this summer, and the left-back suggested that the players are also backing their new boss with the intensity like nothing he has seen during his time at Ibrox.

“The gaffer coming here now has obviously had an amazing career and I am sure all the boys are looking forward to working with him. It does take you a spell to get used to it. They are telling you stuff on the pitch and you are thinking, ‘that is Steven Gerrard talking’,” he said, as reported by the Record.

“But he is your boss at the end of the day so it’s something you have to deal with.

“The training has been good. I’ve noticed a big change in the tempo. In the sessions we’ve had so far you can see in the running that people are giving it absolutely everything because they want a chance to play under a person like Steven Gerrard.”

Having seemingly had reason for optimism during the two previous summers, it seems likely that the Rangers fans will only be allowing themselves cautious optimism at this stage with Gerrard, on paper, seemingly a risky appointment.

But the players certainly appear to be buying into what he is trying to do, and if they can get some momentum going during the early stages of his tenure, then perhaps Gerrard will be able to get through any tricky periods largely unscathed as he gets used to his new surroundings at Ibrox.
