Wolverhampton Wanderers rode their luck against Cardiff City on Friday night.

John Ruddy of Wolves celebrates his sides first goal during the Sky Bet Championship match between Millwall and Wolverhampton at The Den on December 26, 2017 in London, England.

Wolves ace John Ruddy sat down for an exclusive interview with the Express & Star, and admitted how lucky he was to save Gary Madine’s stoppage time penalty, after forgetting his research on the 27-year-old’s previous spot kicks.

The Black Country outfit stretched their lead over the Bluebirds to nine points after Friday’s win, and promotion back to the Premier League now seems to be a mere formality.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side rode their luck at the Cardiff City Stadium, after the hosts missed two late penalties, with Ruddy saving one of them.

The one-capped England international spoke exclusively to the Express & Star, and shared how his bad memory served him well ahead of Madine’s missed spot kick:

John Ruddy of Wolverhampton Wanderers gives orders during the Sky Bet Championship match between Wolverhampton and Fulham at Molineux on November 3, 2017 in Wolverhampton, England.

“I did the research (on Madine) and then I forgot the research! So I went off a gut feeling. And luckily I did because all his other penalties have gone the other way.”

The Black Country outfit need just six more points from their next five games in order to secure promotion back to the top flight, and having someone like Ruddy between the sticks will greatly improve their chances of doing just that.

Next up for Wolves is a home game against promotion-chasing Derby County on Wednesday night, and they could actually secure their place in the top flight for next season, should Fulham fail to beat Reading tomorrow evening.
