According to the Daily Record, Kai Kennedy is now ‘close’ to signing a new deal with Rangers amid long-standing questions over his future.

The teenager is out of contract at the end of the season, and it looked like he would be leaving the club over the summer when reports emerged about a stand-off.

The Daily Record noted in September that Kennedy had been told he could leave Ibrox, and Sheffield United were keen on a deal before the October transfer deadline.

That didn’t happen, and Kennedy was instead sent out on loan to Inverness Caledonian Thistle, where he has bagged a goal and an assist in 10 games.

The 18-year-old had been branded ‘fabulous’ by Steven Gerrard just last year, but it looked like the Gers would end up losing their talented wide man.

Now though, there is new hope that Kennedy will stay put with Rangers, and he may even end up returning to Ibrox in January, with his loan spell potentially ending.

Caley Thistle boss John Robertson has suggested that Rangers have made it clear that Kennedy can see out the season with Inverness – as long as he signs a new deal with the Gers.

Rangers won’t want him to see out the final six months of his contract elsewhere, and Robertson noted that the situation is ‘up for grabs’ as Rangers attempt to sort out a new deal.

“We have spoken to Rangers and they have given us the scenario they see going forward,” said Robertson. “His future with them, first and foremost, is the key thing that has to be discussed between Rangers and the player. Until that is sorted we have to wait and see, as he is a Rangers player.”

“They have told us if he signs a new deal they are quite happy for him to remain here this season. Until he does that, it is up for grabs. That hasn’t been done at the moment, so we will just crack on for the next couple of games before contacting Rangers again to find out what the situation is,” he added.
