John Motson sadly passed away earlier today at the age of 77 as many football fans take to Google in search of his last game.
The commentary legend – famously known as Motty – spent 50 years with the BBC, as his voice became synonymous with their iconic Match of the Day programme.
So, what was Motty’s last game before he hung up his microphone in commentary? Let’s take a look…
John Motson last game
Well, Motson’s final game on commentary duty for BBC Match of the Day came back on Sunday 13th May 2018.
It was a Premier League encounter between Crystal Palace and West Brom at Selhurst Park, which the south Londoners won 2-0 to secure 11th in England’s top-flight on the final day of the 2017/18 campaign.
Motson – known for his trademark sheepskin coats – watched on from the commentary gantry as goals from Wilfried Zaha and Patrick van Aanholt took all three points.
It was a dark day for West Brom, as Roy Hodgson watched his old side finish bottom of the Premier League on 31 points, which sealed their relegation to the Championship.
When did John Motson retire?
Motson – who secretly supported Chelsea and had a strong affinity for Barnet – announced his retirement back in September 2017, when he revealed plans to call time on his career at the end of the 2017/18 campaign.
When announcing his decision, Motty admitted that there was one game he wished he was able to commentate on, but was not given the opportunity as ITV held the rights to coverage – the 1999 Champions League final between Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
Sky News quote Motson as saying at the time: “My opposite number at ITV, Clive Tyldesley, did Manchester United winning the Champions League with two goals in the last minute.
“I was proud of the way he did it but I would have loved to have done it myself, although I wouldn’t have done it as well as he did.
“I’ve never had the opportunity because it has always been a Sky or ITV event but that is the one I’d have liked to have done.”
