The Nigeria international has impressed at the Championship club but his current deal is only until the end of the 2018-19 season.
John Mikel Obi has been a revelation since joining Middlesbrough in January, the Teesiders having lost just once in the Championship since his arrival and sitting fifth in the table with 12 games remaining.
The Nigeria international moved to the Riverside Stadium as a free agent after a stint in China with Tianjin Teda, and made his debut at West Bromwich Albion on February 2, playing for 75 minutes,
Since then, Mikel Obi has gone on to play every single Championship game, playing the entire 90 minutes on each occasion, no mean feat for a player that hadn’t seen competitive action since October 28.
In just six Championship games, he’s had a passing accuracy rate of 86 percent, has won 61.5 percent of his tackles and 49 percent of duels, and is yet to be booked (Goal.com), and it’s no surprise that Boro fans have taken to him.
Mikel Obi’s Boro contract is up at the end of the season (Transfermarkt) and, when asked by BBC Sport about his future beyond the summer, he spoke highly of the club and his teammates but remained somewhat coy about whether he would remain for another season.
“I want to enjoy my football and enjoy winning games with this club, these players are an amazing group of guys,” he said in response.
“Every time we win a game you see that feeling of wanting to be in the Premier League and that is something I want to keep enjoying with them until the end of the season. And then we see where we are.”
