John McGinn was an integral part of Dean Smith winning promotion with Aston Villa last season.

Aston Villa’s John McGinn has honestly stated on Instagram that those who think it’s good to be back are ‘lying’ as he was making reference to trying to get back to fitness.
Midfielder McGinn was late to return to pre-season because of international commitments with Scotland towards the back end of the last campaign.
Those first few days of pre-season are gruelling because of all the fitness work players have to go through as coaching staff try to prepare them for a tough campaign.
Nonetheless, here is McGinn sending a very honest message on his personal Instagram as he returned to pre-season training:
This time last summer, McGinn was walking through the doors of Bodymoor Heath as an unknown player to those currently playing for the club and its supporters.
Now, he is walking through BMH as arguably Villa’s best player after picking up the Players and Supporters Player of the Year last season.

The energetic midfielder was instrumental in Dean Smith’s side earning promotion to the Premier League, as he will be equally as important now they are set to compete with the best.
Villa have been busy during the summer transfer window, but despite signing six players, Smith has yet to sign competition for McGinn’s position.
There’s no doubt that Villa need a defensive-minded midfielder, but the likes of McGinn and Jack Grealish will be expected to start the first game of the season against Tottenham.
