Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn netted an international hat-trick for Scotland last night.

John McGinn of Scotland celebrates scoring the opening goal during the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier between Scotland and San Marino at Hampden Park on October 13, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

John McGinn has told the Glasgow Evening Times that the coaching staff at Aston Villa have completely changed him as a player.

McGinn signed for Villa in 2018 and he has been nothing short of a revelation since he arrived.

The Scottish international starred in the Championship for Dean Smith’s side last term, and he seems to have got even better since promotion.

McGinn has arguably coped with the step up to the Premier League better than any other Villa player and he took his excellent form with his club on to the international stage last night.

The 24-year-old scored a hat-trick at Scotland beat San Marino 6-0.

And McGinn claims that it is Villa’s coaching staff who have made him a goalscoring threat, as he used to be very defensive.

“The goalscoring is something I have been working on because I used to be more of a defensive player. Credit to the staff at Aston Villa right now, I am working tirelessly on making runs into the box and making myself more useful up the park,” he said.

“It seems to be paying off right now so hopefully I can carry it on.”

McGinn already has three Premier League goals in eight games for Villa, and looks one of the most dangerous attacking players in Smith’s team.

Villa return to action after the international break, when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion.
