Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Rangers defender James Tavernier this summer.
Aston Villa could be heading into the Scottish Premiership once again this summer to try and nab one of the top talents from Scotland’s top-flight.
The Daily Mail have claimed that Villa are interested in Rangers defender James Tavernier as the newly-promoted Premier League side aim to strengthen their full-back area.
Last summer, Villa signed John McGinn from Hibernian in what was a relative low-key transfer given the fact that the midfielder was an unknown figure amongst those down south.
Fast forward to today and the 24-year-old has guided Villa back to the Premier League by scoring the decisive goal of the game against Derby County at Wembley last Monday – in total he netted six goals for the club this season [transfermarkt].
Given McGinn’s success, Villa should push for the Tavernier deal because he too could be a gem for the Midlands outfit because he has flourished during his time in Scotland and with Rangers.
Right-back Tavernier is a typical modern-day full-back. He likes to use his pace and power to get forward, not forgetting his ability from dead ball situations.
It remains to be seen what type of fee Rangers ask for one of their key players, but given the fact that Tavernier isn’t playing in the inflated market of the Premier League, just like McGinn, Villa could perhaps pinch him for a bargain price.
In recent seasons, whilst in the Championship, Villa’s big-money signings haven’t paid off, whilst their so-called cheaper purchases or loan signings are the ones that have delivered.
The same could happen with Tavernier, who is proving that he is capable of playing in the Premier League and pushing his game to another level.
