Aston Villa No.7 John McGinn has now responded to Rodri’s comments after the Manchester City maestro criticised Scotland.

What’s the story?

Well, the £70,000-a-week Aston Villa man was told by Rodri that he and his Scotland teammates play a “rubbish” style of football after Spain suffered a 2-0 defeat at Hampden Park.

Sky Sports quote the £62.8m Manchester City star as saying: “It’s the way they play, but for me it’s rubbish, always wasting time, provoking you, always they fall. For me, this is not football.”

Now, McGinn has reacted to Rodri‘s petulant comments.

The 28-year-old told Sky Sports: “I did see the comments. I don’t really have a huge amount of reaction. I’m not sure that falling over is something that could be levelled at us. Wasting time, absolutely. If anyone expects us to go into a head to head tika-taka battle for 90 minutes against Spain and expect us to come away with three points then there’s absolutely no chance.

“We were rolling about? No, we were the same as the Spain players so I don’t really agree with that but Spain are a top team and I’m sure they will be back.”

A very mature, professional response from McGinn, to say the least.

Scotland carried out their game plan to perfection, and they deserve all the credit for defeating one of the best footballing nations in Europe in Tuesday’s UEFA EURO 2024 qualifier.

In our view, McGinn deserves credit for the way he handled Rodri’s childish comments.

We simply can’t stand remarks like the Spaniard made – there are more ways than one to win a game of football, and Scotland ensured they used their qualities effectively.

McGinn easily could have rubbed the defeat in Rodri’s nose, but he opted to be the bigger man and simply dissect why the Manchester City star’s comments were ridiculous.
