Back in June, the Daily Express reported that Celtic were keen on Hibernian midfielder John McGinn and Brendan Rodgers even viewed the 23-year-old as a potential replacement for Scott Brown at some stage in the future.

The Express alluded to Rodgers’ congested midfielder however, and obviously a move did not happen. But with Rodgers a fan of the midfielder, this weekend surely presents the perfect opportunity for McGinn to prove to the Hoops that he is ready to make the step up.

McGinn will be a part of the Hibernian side that will be looking to reach the League Cup final, but standing in their way is the Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

The Hampden Park showdown will not only give McGinn the chance to test himself against the midfielders who Rodgers has kept faith with, but Hibs reaching the final would also represent a hugely significant day in the Celtic boss’ tenure at Parkhead.

Celtic go into the game unbeaten in their last 59 domestic games, and helping Hibs end that incredible run would surely send McGinn’s value through the roof, but also surely send the former St Mirren man right near the top of Rodgers’ list of priority targets.

With Celtic trying to prove that they can make an impact on the European stage, Rodgers will surely only want to target players who appear capable of raising their game on the bigger stages, and Saturday gives McGinn an ideal chance to show that he can be a big-game player.
