Tottenham Hotspur proved how far they have come under Mauricio Pochettino after earning a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid away from home at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night in the Champions League.
After soaking up the early pressure, the north London club took the lead in the 28th minute when Raphael Varane scored an own goal.
However, the lead didn’t last long as Madrid restored parity just before the half-time interval through a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.
Madrid stepped up the pressure in the second half, but Spurs had their moments as well. They defended resolutely, and deservedly picked up a point.
The result (plus Borussia Dortmund’s 1-1 draw against Apoel) puts Spurs in a commanding position along with Real Madrid to qualify for the knock out stages.
Hibernian midfielder John McGinn was following the match, and the Scotland international was particularly pleased with Jan Vertonghen’s performance.
He praised the Belgium defender on social networking site Twitter for his tireless performance on the left flank.
In the absence of Ben Davies, the Belgium defender was used as a left-back in a five-man defence set up, and he duly impressed.
Vertonghen made seven tackles, four clearances, and two interceptions during the game, according to whoscored.com.
