Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has suggested to The Daily Record that he performed better than he expected this season.

McGinn joined Villa from Hibernian in the summer of 2018 for a transfer fee reported by The Times to be worth £2.75 million plus add-ons.

The Scotland international midfielder arrived at Villa Park last summer with a strong reputation, and the 24-year-old was a star for the Villans this season.

According to WhoScored, McGinn made 42 starts and one substitute appearance in the Championship for Villa this campaign, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in the process.

The former St. Mirren star has said that he has been the most consistent this season than he has ever been, and has suggested that he has surprised himself by having a better campaign than he expected.

McGinn told The Daily Record: “It has been brilliant personally. Over the season I think it is the most consistent I have been.

“I just wanted to go down to England and to make some sort of impact but to make the impact I have, I am delighted with that.

“Hopefully I can continue to improve. The St Mirren and Hibs fans will tell you I showed potential but wasn’t consistent enough. I think I’ve found that consistency.”
