Celtic’s assistant coach, John Kennedy, believes that Stuart Armstrong has all the qualities to become the future captain of the club.

The former Dundee United midfielder initially struggled to get into the first team. But, through hard work and dedication, he has taken his game to the next level, and now he is the poster boy for the Treble-winning setup.

Armstrong has not only developed as a key player for the Hoops, but also a match winner and a leader on the pitch. Kennedy believes he exemplifies the change Brendan Rodgers has brought in the Celtic players.

“Stuart’s an important player for us. The manager has spoken to him, everyone has, he’s made a big impact this season on the pitch,” said Kennedy, as quoted by The Daily Record.

“Stuart epitomises the changes and differences in the players. Across the squad everyone is progressing and improving but Stuart is probably the one that everyone has taken real notice of and rightly so.

His transformation has been impressive, and Kennedy says that the 25-year-old could take over the armband from current skipper, Scott Brown.

“Yes, potentially. The manager has given him the opportunity to do that at times this season,” he added.

“He’s that type – when he steps on the training pitch he a bit like Scott. A different type in terms of how he applies himself but he’s a super professional, very intelligent and the more time he spends here he gets a greater understanding of what this club is about.”

Kennedy further adds that Armstrong is a ‘super’ professional and a very intelligent footballer.

Celtic is a big club and captaincy adds many responsibilities. Kennedy says that while there will be big incentives in moving to England, Armstrong should continue at a club that he is already settled in.

Armstrong has enjoyed a superb 2016/17 campaign for Celtic where he scored 17 goals in all competitions.
