John Kennedy explains why staying at Celtic is best for James Forrest’s career

Celtic coach John Kennedy has told James Forrest that while he may have previously thought that he needed to leave Parkhead, staying put is in fact the best decision for his career, the Evening Times reports.

The 25-year-old’s current deal with the Hoops expires in January, and it appeared that he was destined for the exit as the Evening Times reports that he turned down a new contract last season as he moved closer and closer to the periphery of Ronny Deila’s squad.

However, under the Norwegian’s successor Brendan Rodgers, the winger has shown glimpses of what he is capable of at the start of the new season, breaking the deadlock in their win over Hearts on the opening day of the new Scottish Premiership campaign.

And Kennedy has suggested that working under the Northern Irishman will bring the best out of Forrest once again, therefore, he should reconsider his desire to move away if he has not done so already.

“Sometimes it’s the easy option to think things are not going for me so I’ll try to go elsewhere. The grass isn’t always greener,” he told the Evening Times.

“This is a huge club and we now have a terrific manager in place with a massive CV. The manager knows what it’s like to be at the very top level.

“He’s bringing all his experience and working with a top boss can only help James.”

Though it is too early in Rodgers’ tenure to make a strong prediction as to whether his spell at Celtic Park is going to be a success or not, the signs already suggest that he is beginning to get much more out of a squad that – barring a few additions – is the one that Deila struggled with last term.

Against Astana in the Champions League third qualifying round tie, the Bhoys showed plenty of steel to get themselves through when they would have perhaps crumbled last year.

And in Forrest’s case, Rodgers appears to already know what it is going to take to get the best out of him. And if he can help the Scotland international discover the consistency that has eluded him in recent years, then there is surely no question that staying where he is is best for Forrest’s career.
